AMERICAN RED CROSS ISSUES CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Sussex County Citizens Wanted for Disaster Action Teams

Newton, NJ August 5, 2009 – The Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking to increase its base of disaster relief volunteers. The local chapter is offering training sessions this fall to prepare new volunteers for disaster response to support their community members in times of disaster.

Disasters can happen anywhere at anytime as many county residents witnessed first hand with the tornado and heavy wind and rain damage on July 29th.  Disaster Action Team Coordinator Jim Rich said, “Red Cross volunteers who are ready and trained to assist those in need during emergencies are vital to provide the resources needed to victims of local disasters.”

The Sussex County Chapter provides disaster relief services throughout the 522 square miles of the county so volunteers are needed from all municipalities to help the chapter respond to local disasters.  Volunteers are needed to respond to fires, floods, hurricanes, and other disasters in this community, within the state of New Jersey and/or nationwide.

When asked what requirements are necessary to become a Red Cross disaster volunteer, Rich responded, “We are looking for people that have a strong desire to help those in need.”  Resource Development Manager, MaryAnn Maikisch explained that the process of becoming a volunteer includes completing an application, a brief interview, a criminal background check and attendance at an orientation meeting.

American Red Cross Disaster training prepares volunteers to provide service to disaster victims and to support emergency and public safety officials. Disaster Services training is provided free of charge to volunteers and takes place in the evening or on weekends. If you are interested in joining the American Red Cross disaster team, please contact MaryAnn at 973-579-1600 or visit www.sussexredcross.org.  Training will be held at the chapter headquarters, 93 Spring Street, Suite 101, Newton.

The American Red Cross is a non-profit organization that shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The American Red Cross is a charity, not a government agency, and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
