Dog First Aid Training
As seen at the Northern New Jersey Pet Expo on May 9th

Newton, NJ, May 13, 2009 — Volunteer Doug Houskeeper of the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross presented information on Pet First Aid at the Northern New Jersey Pet Expo on May 9th. Attendees who visited with Doug were provided with information and guidance for issues such as; the best way to recognize and respond to an emergency, how to determine dehydration and also that it is crucial to keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date. Doug invites community members to sign up for the full two and a half hour, hands on, training on either June 11th from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at Red Cross Headquarters on 93 Spring Street, Suite 101, in Newton or on June 25th from 5:00pm-7:30pm at Newton Veterinary Hospital on 116 Hampton House Road in Newton.

Dog First Aid Training explains emergency care procedures for dogs in simple terms, and the course fee includes a 116-page full-color book with a companion DVD and features step-by-step directions for topics from giving medication to administering CPR and rescue breathing. “This training is another lifesaving resource that supports the Red Cross mission of keeping Sussex County residents and their families healthy and safe,” said Houskeeper, Volunteer Instructor for the local Red Cross.

Pre-registration is required and the fee for this training class is $40.00 per person. Other upcoming classes include:

On Wednesday, May 27th and Tuesday, June 2nd an Infant and Child CPR class will be offered from 6:00 -10:30 p.m. Attendees will learn the skills needed to provide care for infants and children in the case of breathing emergencies, and perform CPR.  The fee is $55.00

On Thursday, June 4th, a Recertification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer is being offered from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. CALLING ALL LIFEGUARDS – Time to re-certify!  This course is designed for any individual who has a duty to respond to emergencies.  Topics include recognizing and responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies, two-rescuer CPR techniques for drowning and other special situations, using resuscitation and bag-valve masks, use of an AED for a victim of sudden cardiac arrest and using an AED when CPR is already in progress. The fee for the class is $45 and participants must have their own pocket mask.

On Saturday June 6th a Babysitter’s Training course is being offered from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The Babysitter’s Training course has a unique interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11 – 15 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care. The fee for this course is $65.00

On Tuesday, June 9th a First Aid course will be offered from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. This course is intended to teach lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. The fee is $45.00. 

On June 11th a Dog First Aid course will be offered from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the chapter office. Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00.

On June 25th a Dog First Aid training course is being offered at the Newton Veterinary office on Route 206 in Hampton from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.  Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00. Registration must be done through the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross at 973-579-1600.
