AMERICAN RED CROSS OFFERS “WHEN HELP IS DELAYED” CLASS
Newton, NJ, May 19, 2009 – The American Red Cross is offering a First Aid – When Help is Delayed class. The class is designed for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, such as hikers, bicyclists, scout leaders, and campers. It will educate participants how to respond to emergencies when Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response is 30 minutes or more away.
“This is such an important course for anyone in Sussex County who enjoys the outdoor recreation our county is so popular for,” said Jack Card, Sussex County chapter Wilderness First Aid Instructor “and I am happy to be presenting this vital training at our chapter office on June 24th from 7:00 to 10:00pm at a cost of only $30 per person”. Participants will learn to identify delayed-help environments, respond to and provide care for a person who is ill or injured when help is delayed and will discuss some of the difficult decisions that may have to be made when caring for a victim in a delayed-help situation.

On Tuesday, June 2nd an Infant and Child CPR class will be offered from 6:00 -10:30 p.m. Attendees will learn the skills needed to provide care for infants and children in the case of breathing emergencies, and perform CPR. The fee is $55.00
On Thursday, June 4th, a Recertification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer is being offered from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. CALLING ALL LIFEGUARDS – Time to re-certify! This course is designed for any individual who has a duty to respond to emergencies. Topics include recognizing and responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies, two-rescuer CPR techniques for drowning and other special situations, using resuscitation and bag-valve masks, use of an AED for a victim of sudden cardiac arrest and using an AED when CPR is already in progress. The fee for the class is $45 and participants must have their own pocket mask.
On Saturday June 6th a Babysitter’s Training course is being offered from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The Babysitter’s Training course has a unique interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11 – 15 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care. The fee for this course is $65.00
On Tuesday, June 9th a First Aid course will be offered from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. This course is intended to teach lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. The fee is $45.00.
On June 11th a Dog First Aid course will be offered from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00.
On Saturday, June 20th, an Adult CPR/AED course will be offered from 6:00 – 10:30 p.m. The course imparts the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for breathing emergencies, perform CPR, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The fee is $50.00.
On Wednesday, June 24th, First Aid-When Help is Delayed is being offered from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Students must have a current CPR and First Aid certification to become certified. Participants will learn to identify delayed-help environments, respond to and provide care for a person who is ill or injured when help is delayed and will discuss some of the difficult decisions that may have to be made when caring for a victim in a delayed-help situation. The cost is $30 per person.
On June 25th a Dog First Aid training course is being offered at the Newton Veterinary office on Route 206 in Hampton from 5:00pm to 7:30pm. Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00.
