AMERICAN RED CROSS OFFERS FIRST AID FOR DOGS
Training helps dog lovers meet health and safety needs of four-legged loved ones

Newton, NJ, May 27, 2009 — The Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross is known for helping to keep Sussex County residents and their families healthy and safe. Now with “Dog First Aid Training”, the Sussex County chapter is spreading the word that it can do the same for four-legged loved ones as well.  This two-hour and thirty minute session provides hands-on training and guidance for issues such as; the best way to recognize and respond to an emergency, how to determine dehydration and also that it is crucial to keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date.

Dog First Aid Training explains emergency care procedures for dogs in simple terms, and the course fee includes a 116-page full-color book with a companion DVD and features step-by-step directions for topics from giving medication to administering CPR and rescue breathing. “This training is another lifesaving resource that supports our mission of keeping Sussex County residents and their families healthy and safe,” said Melissa Turner, Health and Safety Director. Classes are currently scheduled for Thursday, June 11th at Red Cross Headquarters from 6:00 pm to 8:30 and on Thursday, June 25 from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Newton Veterinary Hospital on Route 206 in Hampton.

Pre-registration is required and the fee for this training class is $40.00 per person. Other upcoming classes include:

On Tuesday, June 2nd an Infant and Child CPR class will be offered from 6:00 -10:30 p.m. Attendees will learn the skills needed to provide care for infants and children in the case of breathing emergencies, and perform CPR.  The fee is $55.00

On Thursday, June 4th, a Recertification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer is being offered from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. CALLING ALL LIFEGUARDS – Time to re-certify!  This course is designed for any individual who has a duty to respond to emergencies.  Topics include recognizing and responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies, two-rescuer CPR techniques for drowning and other special situations, using resuscitation and bag-valve masks, use of an AED for a victim of sudden cardiac arrest and using an AED when CPR is already in progress. The fee for the class is $45 and participants must have their own pocket mask.

On Saturday June 6th a Babysitter’s Training course is being offered from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The Babysitter’s Training course has a unique interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11 – 15 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard and selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care. The fee for this course is $65.00

On Tuesday, June 9th a First Aid course will be offered from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. This course is intended to teach lay responders the knowledge and skills necessary to give care in an emergency, help sustain life and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until medical help arrives. The fee is $45.00. 

On Thursday, June 11th a Dog First Aid course will be offered from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00.

On Saturday, June 20th, an Adult CPR/AED course will be offered from 8:30 – 1:00 p.m. The course imparts the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for breathing emergencies, perform CPR, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The fee is $50.00.

On Wednesday, June 24th, First Aid-When Help is Delayed is being offered from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Students must have a current CPR and First Aid certification to become certified. Participants will learn to identify delayed-help environments, respond to and provide care for a person who is ill or injured when help is delayed and will discuss some of the difficult decisions that may have to be made when caring for a victim in a delayed-help situation. The cost is $30 per person.

On Thursday, June 25th a Dog First Aid training course is being offered at the Newton Veterinary office on Route 206 in Hampton from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.  Participants will learn what to do in the event their dog is ever injured or has a medical emergency; including breathing emergencies. The fee for this training is $40. 00. Registration must be done through the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross at 973-579-1600.
