Golf Classic June 15, 2009 to benefit the American Red Cross in Sussex County

Newton, NJ, May 28, 2009 - The Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross will host its 17th Annual Golf Classic at the beautiful Lake Mohawk Golf on Monday, June 15, 2009. The day begins with a light breakfast for early golfers. Delicious boxed lunches will be available starting at 11:00 a.m.
“A unique modified shot-gun format accommodates both golfers who prefer to play early morning with 7:00-8:30am tee times as well as those who wish to spend the morning at work and the afternoon on the golf course (shot-gun start at 12:30pm). Red Cross volunteers strategically stationed throughout the course ensure that the hunt for errant balls that typically causes tournaments of this scale to get bogged down is avoided,” said event chairman, Dave Johnson.
A short game clinic and putting contest will take place during the cocktail hour which starts at 5:00 p.m. followed by a gourmet buffet dinner, golf awards, raffle and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Various prizes will be given out. Hole-in-one prizes include a 2009 vehicle from Salerno Duane.
The Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross was hit hard by the recent downturn in the economy. Last March, the chapter announced that its modest savings were eroding at an alarming rate and that the fate of the chapter was in the hands of the people of Sussex County since all of the chapter’s funding comes from the people who live here and the companies that do business here. The chapter receives no government funding. Literally thousands of residents responded to the call for help, becoming part of the solution to the chapter’s financial problem by supporting the Heroes for the American Red Cross fundraising campaign that concluded in April.
“The upcoming golf outing is another way that the community can be part of the solution,” said Pat Day, Executive Director of the Sussex County Chapter. “Because of the overwhelming response to the Heroes Campaign, the chapter has a strong new foundation. Now we need to build on this new foundation with sustained community support,” she added.
“Even those who don’t golf are encouraged to join us for dinner or to make a monetary or auction/door prize donation. Join us for a good time and support a great cause,” said Johnson.
Cost for a full day of golf is $175. Sponsorship opportunities start at $100.
