Red Cross Announces Exploring Humanitarian Law Institute for Educators
This Professional Development Training Allows Teachers To Earn CEU's
Newton, NJ, May 28, 2010 — The American Red Cross is pleased to announce the Exploring Humanitarian Law Institute for Educators to be held August 2-5, 2010 in Washington, DC. This training institute is primarily for middle and high school teachers and college faculty in the humanities and social sciences disciplines who are planning to use Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) materials in their classrooms.
The EHL Institute offers educators from across the United States an engaging, hands-on experience with the Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) curriculum. EHL teaches students about respect for life and human dignity, ethical judgment, global citizenship, the protections of the Geneva Conventions and the role of the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations.
The purpose of this training institute is to prepare educators to teach the Exploring Humanitarian Law curriculum (visit www.redcross.org/ehl) effectively in various educational settings. It is also to expand the understanding of international humanitarian law (IHL) throughout the United States. This institute is an exciting professional development opportunity for middle and high school teachers as well as two-year and four-year college faculty. Participants who complete the training are eligible to obtain 3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The American Red Cross is an authorized provider of CEUs through the International Association for Continuing Education & Training (IACET).
A limited number of travel scholarships (to an amount up to $450) are available for a very limited time. The deadline to apply for the EHL Institute scholarship is by COB Friday, June 4, 2010. The Exploring Humanitarian Law Institute for Educators is the best opportunity for educators from high schools and colleges to use the lesson plans and resources in EHL. The cost to attend is reasonably priced at $75, with participants responsible for their own transportation, accommodations and some meals.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a non-profit organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
