HURRICANE ALERT
SEPTEMBER 2, 2008

Last night, almost 60,00 people went to bed on a Red Cross cot, covered themselves with a Red Cross issued blanked and drifted to sleep knowing they were in the warmth and safety of an American Red Cross shelter.

These shelters currently dot the landscape of the Gulf Coast States - 342 shelters, to be exact, spread out over 10 states, from Florida to Texas, and as far north as Kentucky. Many of the residents of these shelters are faced with the unknowns that are sadly all too familiar, realizing that it could be days before they know how their property or possessions were affected by Hurricane Gustav. Thankfully, these residents do know that they are safe and will be well taken care of by the Red Cross as the storm passes.

Food, shelter and emotional support - providing these basic life-saving necessities to residents has been the top priority of the Red Cross during the storm. The Red Cross is committed to keeping people as comfortable as possible until they are able to return home. The Red Cross has urged residents not to attempt to return home until they have been told to do so by officials. Even though the storm has passed in some areas, there is still the danger of other major hazards such as flooded roads, downed power lines and debris.

Fast Facts:

  • 342 Shelter/Evacuation Centers

  • 57,879 shelter overnight stays

  • 107,500 meals served

  • 142,769 snacks served

  • 241 Emergency Vehicle Response vehicles deployed

  • 6,379 comfort kits distributed

  • 3,655 Red Cross workers involved

  • The mobilization of people and supplies for Hurricane Gustav has already cost the Red Cross more than $12 million.

In addition to the continuous response actions and efforts of Hurricane Gustav the American Red Cross will continue to be extremely busy over the next few weeks with the threat of Hurricane Hanna and Hurricane Ike approaching. We will keep you posted as we continue with our operations.
